The Snakebait System Snakebait is actually a fishing system in three parts: an amazingly lifelike, floating snake head of dense, closed-cell foam; a Burke seven-inch swimming tail in living colors that match the head; a special 2/0 offset draft hook. Designed specifically for use in heavy grass and weeds without hanging up, the lure has a hook which also serves as a keel, so that the snake lands and swims right-side up. How to Fish the Snakebait In Brushy, Weedy Water
- Fish heavy cover—naturally! Keep the rod high, at about 11:00 o’clock, to keep line out of pads, stick-ups, moss or weeds. This also leaves you in the best position to set the hook.
- Start with a slow, steadily swimming snake. Increase speed to that of a natural watersnake. When crawling lure over pads or logs, use stop/go retrieve as Snakebait hits pockets of clear water.
- A twitch retrieve—“walking the snake”—works best in wind when wave action might make Snakebait less visible. Twitching requires slack line, to allow lure to move freely. Do not fish with tight line. Let the rod tip move back toward the lure slightly after each twitch.
